Doughboy 3/20 (T)
The reason we enter and attend shows.
- We believe that shows are an integral component of the very fabric of vibrant communities.
- Showing is not just about turning up at a show with or without sheep.
- There are many valuable opportunities that present at shows, not to mention myriad occasions for social interaction, exchange thoughts, ideas, good humour and to invigourate.
- Our aim is to present our sheep for display against other exhibitors to enable comparisons.
- We also appreciate the opportunity to evaluate other breeders’ animals. We enjoy contemplating the prospect of identifying other superior genetics that may enhance our own breeding program.
- Our strategy is to select examples that clearly demonstrate our breeding aims and objectives.
- Definitely not feed/overfeed to impress a judge but to demonstrate our type that is genetically designed/selected to be highly efficient/productive. Modern/contemporary for the important/desirable traits which are essential for our flock, that of our clients, and to increase each other's revenue. There are many animals, equally as good as those in our show team, running on the hills back at the Doone.
- Experience usually demonstrates that most exhibitors have a good idea when they “pen up”, just how well their sheep will compete/compare on the day.
- Showing enables numerous learning opportunities, we have learnt that showing against good competition makes you a better competitor/breeder. We always aim to excel, to improve and strive to achieve better results in the show and back on the farm (or Visa Versa) and thereby gain mutual benefits for ourselves and our clients.
- Staying at home does little towards “lifting the bar” for improving the basket of desirable visual and measurable traits – all of which we judiciously considered in balance.
- Showing is a place where exhibitors are able to get together to express an opinion on the top animals, what are their strengths and perhaps any weaknesses, make comparisons and generally enjoy the occasion for mutual benefit.
- Shows provide a great place to get second opinions, reinforce/consolidate your fundamental ideals/judgement decisions to further progress your future and that of clients.
- Moving Doughboy from Oxford to the Doone has clearly demonstrated, an animal put under pressure on hill country and able to rebound/thrive has been a significant component to the secret to identifying superior genetics. It has certainly shown us that some animals don’t thrive and yet others not only survive but thrive, thereby providing us with the confidence that we are selecting superior genetics that are very capable of performing under less than ideal conditions. We strongly believe these animals will, with due and proper management, be able to shift location and perform.
Fertility, mothering ability and survivability are high on our list of selection criteria.
Make a time to call by the Doone and take a look at our Doughboy Romney Rams, see for yourself how they perform on our rugged terrain, we know you will be suitably impressed. Phone Marcus or Hugh on the below numbers.
"The Doone" is now the home of the robust, registered Doughboy Romney Stud. A primary reason why the stud was relocated to this challenging property was to identify and demonstrate “shift ability” and to dispel the perception that animals won't successfully relocate/shift to other regions. Our breeding objectives are demonstrated by the performance of Romney that withstand and flourish in the climate and terrain, whilst being run under genuine commercial conditions. Considerable emphasis is placed on the necessities of commercial farmer's requests and requirements.
New technologies, including DNA testing, are now in place to help identify superior animals for growth, meat yield and carcase qualities, and other important easy care, high production traits. Fertility, mothering ability along with weaning weights have been monitored for many years and we have a good read/handle on every individual registered sheep. A robust constitution has been identified as a significant trait that has been reinforced since moving to The Doone. It is imperative that our sheep are able to survive and thrive whilst overcoming demanding terrain and rigorous climate conditions.
Our Romneys at The Doone are all visually assessed and rigorously scrutinised at all phases. Data is submitted to Sheep Improvement Services (SIL) for analysis. The introduction of EID tags enables more effective traceability and better management, enabling greater use of the auto 3-way drafting unit. This technology enables greater efficiencies and accuracy in our management processes and decisions. In turn, and in combination with the abovementioned selection criteria, it will also assist our ram clients’ breeding programs.
When contemplating breeding objectives, all traits are considered in balance to achieve a more desirable outcome for our own benefit and that of our ram buyers. Our goal to breed Romneys that are clearly able to survive and thrive with minimal inputs in any location under myriad seasonal and pasture management conditions has been achieved. Additionally, our aims are to provide dual purpose, self-replacing purebred Romney genetics which eliminate the need for multidimensional breeding strategies.
Our breeding program is intensely focused on the needs and requirements of commercial lamb producers, along with consumer desires and eating quality expectations.
We passionately believe that Doughboy Romney will, therefore, perform practically anywhere provided they are adequately managed.
